Cooperative Integrated Reading and Composition (CIRC) Programs disseminated by the Success for All Foundation

CIRC (Now Disseminated as Reading Wings) (Reading)

Beginning Reading

 
CIRC is not designed for beginning reading.

Upper Elementary School

CIRC has moderate evidence of effectiveness for upper elementary school reading. Across nine qualifying studies, the weighted mean effect size was +0.21.

Middle/High School

Struggling Readers

CIRC has moderate evidence of effectiveness for struggling readers. Across three qualifying studies, the mean effect size was +0.46.

About CIRC

CIRC is a cooperative learning program designed to help students develop metacognitive strategies for comprehending narrative and expository text.

Student Team Reading (Reading)

Student Team Reading is not designed for upper elementary reading.

Middle/High School

Student Team Reading has moderate evidence of effectiveness for middle/high school reading. The two qualifying studies included in this review showed effect sizes of +0.40 and +0.06.

About Student Team Reading

Student Team Reading is a variation of CIRC in which students work in four or five member teams to help one another build reading skills.

The Reading Edge (Reading)

The Reading Edge is not designed for upper elementary reading.

The Reading Edge has moderate evidence of effectiveness for middle/high school reading. The two qualifying studies included in this review showed effect sizes of +0.15 and +0.33.

About The Reading Edge

The Reading Edge uses the same cooperative learning structure as Student Team Reading (see above), but regroups students for reading according to their reading level across grades and classes.

Bilingual Cooperative Integrated Reading and Composition (BCIRC) (Reading for English Language Learners)

English Language Learners

BCIRC has limited evidence of effectiveness for reading for English Language Learners. The median effect sizes in one qualifying study were as follows: Spanish Reading=+0.30; Spanish Writing=+0.62; English Reading=+0.54; and English Writing/Language=+0.29.

About BCIRC

BCIRC is a cooperative learning, oracy, reading, and writing program designed to help children in grades 2-5 transition from Spanish to English instruction.
